When That Snoring Sound Keeps You Awake

Many people have the 'unfortunate'  and 'unpleasant'  habit of snoring, and most times they get tired of either waking to the sound of their own snoring.  The  kicking, punching and
shoving by someone else near by.
Snoring is noisy breathing during sleep. It is a common problem among all ages and both genders. It affects approximately 90 million American adults — 37 million on a regular basis. Snoring may occur nightly or intermittently. Persons most at risk are males and those who are overweight, but
snoring is a problem of both genders, although it is possible that women do not present with this complaint as frequently as men. Snoring usually becomes more serious as people age. It can cause disruptions to your own sleep and your bed-partner's sleep.

                    What risk factors increase snoring?

Age – As we get older, we are more likely to snore.

Sex – Men are more likely to snore than women.

Weight – There is strong correlation between BMI, weight/obesity and snoring.

Body/Neck position – Snoring often occurs more often, or louder in the supine position – sleeping on the back. For some people, sleeping in the lateral position (on the side), alleviates snoring

Alcohol – Drinking alcohol increases the likelihood and intensity of snoring.

                                    Simple Tips For Reducing Snoring

» Make some sleeping position adjustments. Sleep on your side or front this can be challenging as it is hard to control your sleeping position when you are asleep.

» Reduce your weight :
Carrying extra pounds can be another contributing factor. Excess weight in the neck and chest will put undue pressure on the breathing passage.

» Try Nasal Strips :
These can be quite effective and work by applying pressure at the bridge of the nose thus opening the air passage allowing freer breathing. It is a band aid solution and doesn't address underlying health issues should there be any.

»  Exercise :
Breathing exercises in combination with exercising the muscles in the throat and tongue have been known to completely cure snoring for some people.

»  Make some dietary adjustments. Reduce alcohol intake.
