Lupita Nyong’o: Speaking Out About Harvey Weinstein

By LUPITA NYONG’O
OCTOBER 19, 2017
I have been following the news and reading the accounts of women coming forward to talk about being assaulted by Harvey Weinstein and others. I had shelved my experience with Harvey far in the recesses of my mind, joining in the conspiracy of silence that has allowed this predator to prowl for so many years. I had felt very much alone when these things happened, and I had blamed myself for a lot of it, quite like many of the other women who have shared their stories.

But now that this is being discussed openly, I have not been able to avoid the memories resurfacing. I have felt sick in the pit of my stomach. I have felt such a flare of rage that the experience I recount below was not a unique incident with me, but rather part of a sinister pattern of behavior.

I met Harvey Weinstein in 2011 at an awards ceremony in Berlin, while I was still a student at the Yale School of Drama. An intermediary introduced him to me as “the most powerful producer in Hollywood.” As an aspiring actress, I was of course eager to meet people in the industry but cautious about strangers, and the intentions of men in general. So I tried to vet this famous producer by asking my dinner-table companions what they knew of him. A woman who was a producer herself cautiously advised me to “keep Harvey in your corner.”

Do You Know An Emperor

In  every walk of life, there are those who stand out from the rest of the crowd. These are people who seem to draw people to them like magnets draw metal, or there are those who a lot of people would like to get to know, or be friends with. Then, there are those who see themselves as emperors - the type of person who personifies arrogance, and self-aggrandizing or conceited behavior.

An Unfortunate Encounter
A few short years ago, I was unfortunate enough to become acquainted with such an emperor, one who seemed to portray concern, and one who offered themselves to others as a person to depend on when times were rough.

In this particular situation, there was a horrible crisis within the family where a vibrant, young woman was in trouble - trouble that saw her scream out for love, understanding and

WHY WORRY?

For months I notice the painted rock that sat on Karen's coffee table. The rock was painted and its face had a smile that just made you smile when you looked at it. I examined the rock and painted on the bottom was "why worry".
Curious I asked Karen where she got the rock.

A Gift With A Clear Message
She told me that during a very stressful time in her life, a friend that she worked with gave her the rock. Her friend told her that when she looked at this rock, she was to remember not to

How Old Are You

If we did not know our age, some of us would appear to be very young, and some of us would seem very old.

What Is Your Purpose
Age is just a number. Yes our bodies do age and our appearance can change, however, some people start ageing at a very young age. They are content to sit on a couch and not set any goals. Whereas, some older people never stop having goals. I think the older you get the more you realize how short life truly is; and how fast time flies by. We all need a purpose, a reason to get up every day, no matter what your age.

Don't Let Age Be An Excuse
Sometimes, people use age as a convenient excuse. "I'm too old to start something new", or, "I
