Why Do We Get Hiccups?

Hiccups are so common in our lives that we hardly wonder as to why we get them. It seems like they come and go at their own will. Hence, we don’t give it much of a thought.

However, most of us have noticed that hiccups occur when we try to eat or drink something too fast. This happens to be the most common cause of hiccups. It is because the muscles that help us breathe are located between the ribs and diaphragm.

When we eat or drink something in a hurry, our stomach becomes irritated and
distended, hence the diaphragm contracts just like when we breathe in, and hence we  hiccup. It doesn’t matter how we get them, at the end of the day it is uncomfortable and often awkward for most of us.

Sometimes, hiccups do not stop and keep on happening in that case, it is best to seek immediate medical help.

What can we do to stop hiccups?

1) Holding your breath for some time helps.

2) Breathing into a paper bag, increases the amount of carbon
dioxide in the lungs and that stops the hiccups.

3) For some people, gargling with ice water helps.

4) You can put a pinch of sugar under your tongue too.

5) Pulling out your tongue works for many.

6) Finally, the age-old method of scaring someone or distracting
    can help stop hiccups.
