As hard as Nelson tried, he just could not concentrate in class. The same numbers he used to find very easy to work with now looked like ancient Egyptian codes to him. His mind was in no state to do maths or any other thing but worry. He involuntarily continued pulling at his eyebrows as he did under pressure, hoping not to draw blood. Although Bruno had told him that everything would be fine, he still could not keep himself in check, and if there was one person that Nelson trusted with his life, it was Bruno. Ever since the day Bruno had stood up for him at the soccer field, he had begun earning Nelson's love, respect and trust. Bruno's actual name was Okafor Kingsley, but no one as good looking and popular as him could exist without a Nickname in the school. He had it all; the best clothes, the best shoes, photos with celebrities, a driver's license and surprisingly, good grades, he was basically what every boy in the school hoped to become.
Nelson on the other hand, was the son of a very modest clergyman, Pastor Mbaka and
consequently, he wasn't a very notable member of the social circle in the school. He was one of those students that boys like Bruno would see every weekday in school and still not recognize during the weekend. So, the unprecedented union of Bruno and Nelson came as a surprise to everyone including Nelson who initially saw Bruno as a figure rather than a potential acquaintance. Bruno, however, seemed to see Nelson as the only student worthy of being his friend. He gradually transformed Nelson from a plain, negligible personality in the school to one that mattered by mere association. Nelson might not have been getting invitations to parties or winks from pretty girls but the boys who shook Bruno now tapped Nelson's shoulder, the ladies who kissed Bruno's cheeks now waved at Nelson. Nelson would accompany Bruno to the swimming pool and watch in admiration as Bruno would skilfully take off his shirt, flexing every muscle in his torso in the process.
This stunt usually got him the attention of every lady present including those that were there on a date, and Nelson would stand by the pool, fully clothed, absolutely content with the glances he'd get when Bruno tossed his shirt at him. Bruno would smoke cigars with older men at bars and Nelson would sit somewhere around enjoying his mild alcohol diluted with soda to the point of nullification. To the average observer, Nelson was more of a sidekick than a friend to Bruno, and Nelson would have been fine being just that but Bruno always made him feel better than that. Bruno would always check on him at such events and make sure he had enough to eat or drink. On multiple occasions, Bruno offered to teach Nelson how to drive but Nelson refused for the fear of damaging Bruno's father's SUV which was the most expensive vehicle Nelson had been driven in at the time. He even went as far as buying Nelson a pair of sneakers on his birthday. For these reasons and more, Nelson loved Bruno as much as heterosexuality would permit.
The first time Bruno brought up the sex matter was roughly three months after they had become friends and another three before he was worried sick at school . It was Catherine's birthday party and everyone from school was there including Aisha. Aisha was from a very staunch Muslim home, but she was not as antisocial as one would expect her to be under such scrutiny. Asides being the only girl that wore a hijab to school, she was the only girl that seemed to notice Nelson before he became friends with Bruno, offering him the occasional wave and smile. Asides that, she had never done anything particularly suggestive of any interest in Nelson. Not until that evening. It actually ensued quite unceremoniously as she walked directly to where he was seated that evening and sat right beside him, a little closer than he knew his father would have approved of. Then after close to a half minute of silence due to confusion on Nelson's part and hesitance on Aisha's, she said, "Hi". Her monosyllabic show of bravery triggered a warm conversation that spanned close to an hour.
