How To Avoid Food Poisoning

Food poisoning is one of the most common ailments that affect us. It mainly happens from contaminated, toxic or spoiled food. Bacteria form on this food and get inside our stomach. But how?

1)  Fish, meat or vegetables and fruits can get contaminated
     while they are packed.

2)  If the food or raw produce is not washed properly or if the
utensils are dirty, bacteria can form there.

3)  Food, when kept in the open for 2 or more hours, can get

toxic as the bacteria in it can multiply.

The two bacteria that mainly cause food poisoning are E.Coli and Salmonella. Food poisoning can cause diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, nausea, headache, and even mild fever.  If diarrhea continues for more than 3 days or if there are severe symptoms of dehydration like a dry mouth, then food poisoning can be life-threatening.

How to avoid food poisoning?

1) Don’t buy food or even grocery items from places that look
    shabby and dirty.

2) Always check the expiration date on food packs.

3) Wash your hands before you start cooking and also before
    eating.

4) Make sure the food you have cooked has been cooked well
so that it is not raw at all.

5) Keep raw food and cooked food in separate sections.

6) Make sure you store cold food in cold temperature and keep
    hot food hot.

What to do if you get food poisoning?

1)  Get a lot of rest.

2)  Drink plenty of water and other liquids like sports drinks that
      are high in electrolytes.

3)  Follow a BRAT diet (Banana, Rice, Applesauce, Toast)

4)  Avoid caffeine, alcohol and high-sugar content food.

5)  Opt for over the counter medicines to stop diarrhea.

6)  See the Doctor if it continues for more than 2 days.

Eat safe, keep your tummy happy!
